DIDACTIC TRAINING

Throughout the three years, all residents attend didactic lectures series in:

  • Dermatopathology (taught by Drs Verallo-Rowell, Obieta and Jamora). Glass slides are also reviewed with the faculty.
  • Case conference and Grand Rounds (held weekly on Wednesday lunchtime). Rare and interesting teaching cases are presented by residents with staff in attendance.
  • Consultant’s Lecture Series – guest lecturers with specialty in various subspecialties on dermatology are invited to give lectures once to twice monthly
  • Subspecialty Lecture Series – resident-directed lecture series on Photomedicine, Contact dermatitis, Leprosy and Immunodermatology
  • Journal Club – important clinical studies or interesting articles presented by residents with a faculty member.
  • Fitzpatrick Examinations – staff written short examinations are given once to twice monthly covering all the chapters of Fitzpatrick’s Dermatology in General Medicine textbook.

During first year, residents spend time equally at the charity clinics of Victoriano Luna Medical Center, Ospital ng Makati and Dr Jamora's private clinic, while attending all academic activities. Charity clinics provide medical dermatologic services and dermatologic surgery services. All residents have the opportunity to perform various dermatologic procedures throughout the three years.

First year residents are required to present a case conference and submit a case report at the end of the year. In the second year, residents spend time at the charity clinics, then do one to three months of subspecialty rotations in the following areas of their choice:

  • Pediatric Dermatology – rotation at Philippine Childrens Medical Center with Dr Rowena Romero-Francisco and Dr Edna Baello
  • Phototherapy and Research Elective – rotation at Dr Verallo-Rowell’s phototherapy and psoriasis day care center, and clinical rotation with Dr Genevieve Chi. This is combined with a focus on conducting and completing clinical research directed by Dr Verallo-Rowell, with access to research resources and equipment.
  • Cosmetic Plastic Surgery – residents rotate for a maximum of 1 month with a cosmetic or plastic surgeon of their choice.
  • Sexually transmitted disease and Leprosy Rotation – rotation at San Lazaro Hospital with a focus on infectious diseases and STDs.
  • Laser, Lights and Dermatologic Surgery – rotation with Drs. Nellie T Yu (preceptor), Jonathan Yu and Nicole Yu at their clinics with exposure to various laser and light sources (fractionated resurfacing, nonablative radiofrequency, diode/RF laser, intense pulsed light sources +/- pneumatic assistance), fillers and Botox and basic dermatologic surgery.

Third years residents supervise junior residents at outpatient clinics and answer inpatient consultations, and rotate through preceptorships with Dr Sylvia Jacinto and Dr Jasmin Jamora at the Skin Clinic, and with Dr Vermen Verallo-Rowell. Third year residents also have the option of pursuing clinical and laboratory research projects and are required to submit an original clinical research paper at the end of the year.
